Uniteens - Spirit Groups

Spirit groups are the small group sessions where we explore our spirituality by having fun discussions and participate in exciting activities.  These groups are led by an NGUer or adult and a supportive co-leader.  These groups typically consist of 10 people made up of members of multiple church groups in attendance.  This way we have the opportunity to meet other Unity kids from across the region.

Always attend the Spirit Group Leader meetings for regular updates & clarity in material.

Take Time to become Centered
Prepare yourself first. Spend time in meditation to connect with God. Be open to Gods Direction. Be open to your inner wisdom. When you are centered, your group will be centered.

Focus on the Group
Always start by centering and connecting the group with an opening prayer even if you are late in starting. Use the one provided. Ask the group to FOCUS when you need their attention. If people are having trouble staying with an activity or discussion, try another centering prayer, ask everyone to breathe and remember to breathe for yourself.

Set the Tone
Your tone sets the tone for each activity. The group will pick up on your tone and energy. If it is light, keep it light. If it is quiet, keep it quiet. When you need quiet you may lower the lights or put on soft music. Use your example, your words, and your actions to model the energy for the group. As a leader, model appropriate behavior in both small group, large group and during the entire event.

Be Prepared
Read and understand the material beforehand. Set up the room and materials before the Spirit Group session begins. Clarify any questions about material with the Regional Consultant.

Let the group do the Discussion
You may need to become comfortable with waiting for a response from people in the group. BE OKAY WITH SILENCE. Be willing, to wait for answers. Discussion means more than one answer and that everyone is entitled to share. Wait for several people to respond.

Allow time for thought processing
Be sure to allow time for the participants to think about what you are asking them & discussing. Remember you should be aware of the material; this is their first time in hearing it and thinking about what it means to them in this now moment.

Keep it Moving
Avoid dragging out activities as this creates boredom and encourages lack of focus.

Time (take into account divine time at this event)
Check the timing in your material before you are in each session. Take the time to see how you think it will work. Be willing to stop an activity if the next one needs to start. Use a clock or assign a time keeper who wears a watch. Reminder: NO cell phones are to be used at this retreat.

Encourage Everyone to Participate
Allow for the right to pass but be aware of tendency of some to dominate and some to ALWAYS hold back... ask to hear from someone that has not shared. Remind everyone that each person is important and all opinions are important.

Closing
Always take time for a Closing Circle even when running late. DO a short prayer and hugs – only if welcome for all. This acknowledges the end of this particular time spent together.
